As the festive season sets in, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has issued a warning to Kenyans, particularly revellers, to be vigilant about the growing danger of drink spiking.
This alarming trend, where individuals unknowingly consume drugs added to their drinks, has been on the rise, posing serious risks to party-goers across the country.
The DCI has highlighted several incidents where unsuspecting holidaymakers were drugged at popular drinking spots.
One such case involved a man who, after a night of partying, was approached by a woman and accompanied her to his hotel room.
However, the next morning, the woman was seen leaving the room, having stolen valuable items such as mobile phones, a watch, and ATM cards.
The thief later used the stolen ATM cards to drain the victim’s bank accounts, leaving him with no way to trace his stolen belongings.
The DCI is currently on the lookout for the suspect and urges the public to remain cautious when socializing in such environments.
The police also pointed out that such incidents are becoming more frequent as the holiday season continues.
With large numbers of people attending social gatherings, the risks of falling victim to theft or violence increase.
The DCI advises revellers to remain aware of their surroundings and avoid accepting drinks from strangers or leaving their drinks unattended.
In addition to the rising threat of drink spiking, the Interior Ministry has raised concerns about other security challenges during the holidays.
Petty crimes such as pickpocketing and muggings are expected to escalate in crowded areas like markets, shopping malls, and transport hubs.
Moreover, the production and distribution of illicit alcoholic beverages remain a significant issue, with authorities on high alert to address these illegal activities.
Traffic-related issues also continue to pose a danger during this time. Reckless driving, including speeding and drunk driving, has been a major cause of accidents in past holiday seasons.
The police urge drivers to be cautious and follow road safety rules to prevent accidents.
