Senator Samson Cherargei has urged Kenyans to unite behind Raila Odinga’s candidacy for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship, calling it a matter of national importance.
The Nandi County senator took to social media, appealing for patriotism, and emphasized the need to support Raila’s bid for the sake of Kenya's global standing.
Raila Odinga’s candidacy has generated mixed reactions among the public.
A significant portion of the Kenyan population is deeply upset with the ODM leader for aligning himself with President William Ruto’s government, especially amid widespread youth-led dissatisfaction with the current administration.
Many feel betrayed by Raila’s decision, believing that his past fight for good governance has been undermined by his support for Ruto’s regime.
This opposition has created a tense environment as Raila pushes for the AUC seat, with some Kenyans even hoping for his failure in the upcoming vote in Addis Ababa.
However, Senator Cherargei remains optimistic. He framed Raila’s potential election to the AUC chairmanship as a matter that transcends individual political affiliations and becomes a collective effort for Kenya’s benefit.
He acknowledged the contentious nature of Raila’s decision to support President Ruto, but insisted that this is a time for Kenyans to think beyond party lines.
“For once, let’s be patriotic,” Cherargei said, emphasizing that the outcome of this election is crucial not just for Raila, but for the entire nation.
Cherargei expressed his belief that President Ruto’s backing would play a pivotal role in securing the position for Raila.
With the Kenyan government actively supporting Raila’s campaign, he argued that the country's involvement in the election process is significant.
He encouraged the nation to join in prayer, hoping that Raila’s candidacy would be successful, thus bringing pride to Kenya.
“This is a moment for all of us to support our own,” Cherargei added. “We should pray for Raila to win the AUC chairmanship. It is for the good of Kenya.”
