Ugandan opposition leader Bobi Wine has raised concerns about the increasing cases of abductions in Kenya.
Speaking through a post on X (formerly Twitter), he criticized President William Ruto’s administration, warning that the country is sliding into dangerous territory.
According to him, Kenya is losing its reputation as a beacon of hope in East Africa and becoming “a playground for dictators.”
“It saddens me to see how fast Kenya is descending,” Bobi Wine said.
“This was a country many looked up to in our troubled region, but now, abductions of young citizens critical of the government are becoming common.”
His remarks come in the wake of recent incidents where individuals voicing opposition to Ruto’s government have reportedly disappeared.
Bobi Wine urged Kenyans to resist these actions and protect their constitution. “If you don’t defend your constitution while it’s strong, it will become too weak to defend you.
These actions may seem small now, but they grow roots and become harder to uproot,” he cautioned.
Bobi Wine’s statements align with reports of Ugandan opposition leader Kizza Besigye’s alleged abduction in Nairobi on November 16.
Besigye had traveled to attend a book launch hosted by Martha Karua, leader of the NARC Kenya party.
According to Besigye’s wife, Winnie Byanyima, he vanished during the event and was later taken to Uganda, where he faced prosecution in a military court.
“This is a clear sign of how repression is creeping into Kenya,” Bobi Wine remarked. “In Uganda, we’ve seen this before.
It starts with one or two cases, then grows into targeting thousands. Don’t wait until it becomes the norm.”
Bobi Wine appealed to Kenyans to remain vigilant and oppose any signs of dictatorship.
“I sympathize with my Kenyan brothers and sisters. Resist these actions before they destroy your democracy,” he said.
The rising cases of abductions have sparked concern among human rights groups and the public, with many demanding accountability from the government.
Critics accuse the administration of using such tactics to silence dissent.
As Kenya faces these challenges, Bobi Wine’s words serve as a warning about the dangers of complacency.
“Uproot repression while it’s still a seedling, or it will grow into an unshakable tree,” he concluded.
