Pastor John Michael Ekamu, 52, of the Agule Pentecostal Assemblies of God (PAG) in Serere District, was conducting prayers for a young man believed to be possessed by demons.
Simon Ogwang, 30, was brought to the church by his parents, who hoped the pastor could help free him from spiritual torment.
During the prayer session, Ogwang reportedly became uncontrollable and kicked the pastor, causing significant injuries.
Despite the impact, Pastor Ekamu managed to stand and continued leading the prayers, determined to complete the session.
The following morning, Christmas Day, Pastor Ekamu returned to the church to lead a special service.
However, his condition worsened, and he collapsed during the sermon.
Members of the congregation rushed to assist him, but he initially refused to seek medical attention, declaring, “The devil has been defeated.”
As his condition deteriorated, the pastor was taken to Serere Health Center IV, where medical examinations revealed internal injuries, including cuts to his pancreas.
Doctors attempted to save him through surgery, but he passed away shortly after being admitted.
His body was later transferred to Soroti Regional Referral Hospital for a postmortem examination.
Authorities in Eastern Uganda have confirmed the incident and have detained Simon Ogwang for questioning.
East Kyoga Regional Police Commander Damalie Nachuha announced that investigations into the case are ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding the pastor’s death.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the local community, with many expressing sorrow over the loss of a respected spiritual leader.
Pastor Ekamu was well-known for his dedication to his congregation and his unwavering faith in the face of challenges.
This tragic event highlights the dangers associated with intense spiritual practices such as exorcisms.
