The daring escape occurred after the inmates managed to destroy their cell door and assault an officer on duty.
According to the police report, the prisoners took advantage of a wooden frame from the broken cell door to attack the guard, striking him on the forehead.
After incapacitating the officer, the group made their escape.
The injured officer immediately alerted the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) about the incident.
"The cell sentry personnel, through a phone call to the OCS, reported that four prisoners had broken out of the cells and one of them struck him on the forehead using a wooden frame from the door," stated the police report.
The four escapees had been detained on charges ranging from drug possession to assault.
Their sudden flight has prompted a combined effort by officers from both the National Police Service (NPS) and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to track them down.
Authorities are urging the public to remain watchful and report any information that might aid in their recapture.
This incident shows ongoing security challenges in Kenya’s police detention facilities.
While efforts to ensure strict monitoring are often implemented, cases of prisoner escapes continue to highlight systemic weaknesses.
Earlier this year, another shocking breakout occurred at the Gigiri Police Station in Nairobi. In that instance, 13 prisoners, including a self-confessed serial killer, escaped custody by breaching a wire mesh and allegedly walking out undetected.
The escapee, Collins Jumaisi, had previously confessed to committing 42 murders, making the lapse in security particularly concerning.
While investigations into the Magena escape are ongoing, the authorities are likely to increase measures to ensure such incidents are minimized in the future.
The injured officer is reportedly recovering, though his condition has not been officially detailed.
