An unusual incident shocked residents of Yatta, Machakos County, when a police officer fired 30 rounds of ammunition at a local bar.
The dramatic scene unfolded on Friday, December 27, 2024, at Imperial Lounge, leaving patrons and officers shaken.
The officer, identified as Police Constable Fredrick Kipchoge from Matuu Police Station, reportedly caused a commotion over a woman he claimed was his girlfriend.
According to police reports, the dispute started around 2:40 am, prompting staff at the bar to alert authorities.
Kipchoge fled the scene upon noticing police presence, but the situation escalated hours later.
At approximately 5:25 am, Kipchoge returned to the police station, took an AK-47 rifle loaded with 30 rounds of ammunition, and headed back to the lounge.
His colleagues, including the Officer Commanding Station (OCS), followed him to address the issue.
When confronted, Kipchoge alleged that a man in the bar had “stolen” his girlfriend and insisted on resolving the matter.
Attempts by his fellow officers to calm him down failed, leading to a tense standoff.
Kipchoge then fired all 30 rounds in front of his colleagues, creating panic within the establishment.
Despite the alarming number of shots fired, no injuries were reported during the incident.
Officers managed to disarm Kipchoge and arrest him. He is currently in custody as investigations continue.
The incident has sparked discussions on the conduct and emotional well-being of law enforcement officers.
Citizens have raised concerns about how officers handle personal disputes and the potential danger such behavior poses to the public.
In a nightclub in Naivasha on the same day. The victim, identified only as Ngugi, was reportedly shot in the neck by an intoxicated officer following a heated argument.
The officer allegedly urinated on Ngugi’s motorbike, triggering the altercation. Ngugi is recovering at Naivasha Sub-County Hospital.
