The late athlete Ezekiel Otuoma’s aunt, Deborah, recently opened up about the bond she shared with her nephew and the incredible care his wife, Racheal, provided for him.
Speaking with Kenya Finest, Deborah fondly recalled Otuoma’s childhood, describing him as an obedient young man who loved football and was always willing to help with household chores.
“He was very disciplined. He loved football from a young age, and he did well in school too,” Deborah said.
“He got to the national level even in secondary school, and that’s when he moved to Nairobi. He was focused, hardworking, and had a bright future ahead of him.”
Deborah shared that Otuoma’s football talent was something that ran in the family.
As he rose in the sport, Otuoma’s dedication was clear, and his career continued to flourish.
However, it was in his later years that Racheal’s dedication to him truly shone.
Deborah explained that as Otuoma’s health deteriorated, Racheal played a vital role in his care.
“He couldn’t speak at some point, and he used signs to communicate. Racheal was there for him, learning to understand everything he needed,” she recalled.
"He told her he wanted me, and I tried to feed him, but it was clear that Racheal was his strength."
What truly moved Deborah was the vow Racheal made to Ezekiel. “Racheal told me that only death would separate them.
She stood by him even through the hardest times. It would have been easy for anyone to give up, but Racheal didn’t. She stayed until the very last minute,” Deborah said with deep admiration.
Racheal’s commitment to Ezekiel was not just about marriage vows but about love and perseverance.
Even in his weakest moments, she never left his side. "If she wasn't a woman with a big heart, she would have left him midway.
But Racheal has shown so much strength and patience, and I’m proud of her,” Deborah added.
Priscilla, Otuoma’s grandmother, also reflected on the emotional loss, noting that her grandson passed away in December, just like his father had many years ago.
She spoke of Ezekiel’s love for God and how he always involved her in his important decisions.
