A tragic attack in Mandera County on Monday, December 9, 2024, left a Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) driver dead and a police vehicle stolen.
The incident occurred in Lafey town, near the Kenya-Somalia border, and has raised fresh concerns about security in the area.
According to reports, the attackers ambushed the officer’s vehicle during the day, fatally shooting the driver before hijacking the four-wheel-drive Land Cruiser.
The driver’s body was discovered dumped nearby, while a civilian passenger, identified as Muhumed Bashir, was abducted.
Bashir was later found abandoned in a bush with serious injuries and is currently receiving medical treatment.
Lafey MP Mohamed Abdikheir strongly condemned the attack, expressing his sorrow over the loss of the officer.
He also sent his heartfelt condolences to the officer’s family and friends while wishing Bashir a quick recovery.
“It is unfortunate that such a heinous act occurred in our town,” said Abdikheir.
“I urge all residents to remain calm and cooperate with security agents as they work to bring the perpetrators to justice.”
In response to the attack, a multi-agency security team was deployed to the area.
Authorities suspect the attackers had planned the ambush and may have fled into Somalia.
Efforts to track them are underway, with the team utilizing both ground and aerial surveillance.
“Our security forces are working tirelessly to pursue those responsible for this crime. We are confident that justice will be served,” added Abdikheir.
The officer’s body has been moved to a local mortuary for post-mortem examination, while arrangements are being made to airlift both the body and Bashir to Nairobi.
This incident highlights the persistent insecurity along Kenya’s border with Somalia, where similar attacks have occurred in the past.
Criminal gangs and suspected militants often exploit the porous border, targeting civilians and security personnel.
