Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has praised the unexpected meeting between President William Ruto and former President Uhuru Kenyatta in Ichaweri, Kiambu County, as a pivotal moment for Kenya’s national stability and unity.
The two leaders, who had a strained relationship leading up to the 2022 General Election, appear to be reconciling, signaling a significant step forward for the nation.
In a statement shortly after the meeting, Kindiki commended the move, emphasizing that such rapprochement between the former allies could strengthen the country’s social and political fabric.
“This meeting works well for national unity, stability, and enables the country to collectively focus on addressing national development priorities,” Kindiki stated.
The meeting, held at Uhuru’s rural home, featured candid discussions on various pressing national issues.
Central to their dialogue was the reconstitution of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), a contentious matter that has sparked heated political debates and legal challenges.
Both leaders underscored the importance of resolving pending court cases regarding the IEBC selection panel to expedite the appointment of new commissioners and ensure the commission’s functionality.
The two also discussed broader national and global challenges affecting Kenya.
They highlighted the lingering economic and social impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, disruptions caused by the ongoing Ukraine war, and the challenges posed by a volatile global economic climate.
In addition, they jointly expressed support for Raila Odinga’s bid for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship, reflecting a commitment to Kenya’s broader interests in regional and international leadership.
President Ruto used the opportunity to thank Uhuru for laying a foundation that has supported his administration’s flagship initiatives under the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda.
Despite their past political differences, Ruto acknowledged that continuity and collaboration between administrations are crucial for Kenya’s progress.
The meeting comes at a time when the Kenya Kwanza administration faces criticism and mounting pressure to address economic hardships and political instability.
According to Kindiki, this renewed cooperation between Ruto and Uhuru creates an atmosphere conducive to tackling critical issues and fostering unity among Kenyans.
The surprise meeting has sparked widespread discussion, with many citizens and political analysts viewing it as a positive development.
