On December 28, 2024, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua made a strong declaration that he would not align with former President Uhuru Kenyatta or President William Ruto, regardless of any future political developments.
Speaking from his Nyeri home, Gachagua emphasized that his loyalty is to the people of Mt. Kenya, not to individual political figures.
“I don’t follow anybody myself. I only follow the people,” Gachagua said, stressing the importance of listening to the electorate.
He made it clear that while some may speculate about political alliances, he remains firmly committed to representing the interests of the Mt. Kenya region.
“The people of this region don’t follow leaders; it is leaders who follow the people,” he explained.
This statement came in the wake of a December meeting between Uhuru Kenyatta and President Ruto, which sparked rumors of a possible political partnership.
While the meeting was seen by some as a sign of reconciliation between the two leaders, neither made any public commitment to working together.
However, President Ruto has recently appointed several of Uhuru’s allies to key government positions, fueling further speculation about the future of the political landscape.
Despite this, Gachagua dismissed any idea that he might support Uhuru’s possible return to working with Ruto.
“I don’t know whether Uhuru is going to Ruto, I don’t have that information,” Gachagua said.
His stance was clear: he will not follow Uhuru or any other leader who does not align with the will of the people.
In addition, Gachagua hinted at the possibility of forming a powerful political alliance ahead of the 2027 elections.
He suggested that Mt. Kenya and the Ukambani region could join forces to form a strong coalition.
“We need to come together and rally behind a leader who understands our issues,” he said, referring to Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka.
Gachagua believes that by joining forces, they could secure a combined 14 million votes in 2027, with Mt. Kenya contributing at least 10 million votes.
“We are already in talks,” Gachagua revealed, noting that their political formation would focus on economic revival and eliminating political deceit.
