Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has challenged the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) to expel him from the party, accusing its leadership of intimidation due to his stance against the Raila Odinga-William Ruto deal.
Speaking during a bursary distribution event in Mihang’o on Sunday, December 22, Babu declared that he would not compromise his principles, even if it cost him his place in the party.
"I campaigned for Raila Odinga because I believed in his leadership, but I cannot support a government that has oppressed the common mwananchi," Babu asserted.
He further criticized ODM officials for pressuring him to align with their new political direction.
"To support William Ruto, you must suspend your brain. I told Baba [Raila Odinga] that I cannot do that," he added.
Babu alleged that some unnamed ODM officials have threatened to deny him a party ticket in the 2027 General Election.
However, he maintained that his loyalty lies with his constituents, not the party. "If they want to chase me away from ODM, let them do it.
I was elected by the people of Embakasi East, not by ODM," he said.
The MP also dismissed claims that he should be afraid of the party leadership.
"Should I live in fear because some people in the party are threatening me?
I came from Nyalenda, and the people of Embakasi gave me their trust. That trust is more important than any party position," he stated.
Babu expressed frustration over being overlooked for leadership roles within ODM.
He accused the party of using him for demonstrations and protests while denying him opportunities to serve in higher positions.
"Am I a child when party positions are vacant but an adult when they need someone to face arrests or lead protests?" he questioned.
Despite these challenges, Babu remains optimistic about his political future. He hinted at a possible presidential run in 2027, saying, "Wacha tujipange [Let us prepare]."
Babu’s defiance highlights growing tensions within ODM, especially among younger leaders.
His bold stance raises questions about the party’s cohesion and its relationship with members who oppose the Raila-Ruto deal.
