Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has come to the defense of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, amid growing criticism over his recent political collaboration with President William Ruto.
The criticism was particularly sparked by the rise of the hashtag #RailaMustFall on X (formerly Twitter), with some Kenyans questioning Raila's political choices and his bid to lead the African Union Commission (AUC).
Cherargei, a strong supporter of President Ruto, took to social media to counter the criticism, suggesting that Raila's long tenure in opposition should not be seen as a reason for his continued political isolation.
The senator pointed out that Raila, who has spent nearly 40 years in opposition politics, has earned the right to shift his stance and collaborate with the government.
He emphasized that no politician, including Raila, should be expected to remain in opposition forever.
Cherargei's defense extended beyond just a call for Raila to have a chance at working with the government.
He argued that opposition leadership should not be monopolized by any single individual.
According to him, other seasoned politicians, such as Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, were capable of stepping into the role of opposition leader.
By suggesting that opposition leadership is not the exclusive domain of Raila Odinga, Cherargei is advocating for political evolution within Kenya’s democratic structure.
Furthermore, Cherargei pointed out that some of the criticism Raila faces stems from his international ambitions, particularly his bid for the AUC chairmanship.
The senator defended Raila's aspirations, calling him a "true Pan-Africanist" who deserves the opportunity to represent the continent at such a prestigious level.
Cherargei believes that Raila’s shift from being a prominent opposition figure to potentially serving in a continental role demonstrates growth and a broader political vision for Africa.
In light of the criticism, the senator suggested that those who oppose Raila's move to support the government are simply sore losers from the 2022 elections.
This, he argued, was a factor fueling the backlash.
Cherargei's remarks come after Blue Economy and Mining Cabinet Secretary Hassan Joho also expressed disappointment with Kenyans who wished for Raila's failure in his continental bid, emphasizing that such sentiments were unpatriotic.
