Senior Economic Advisor to Kenya’s Executive, Moses Kuria, has called for the immediate revival of the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) to address the country’s persistent political instability.
His remarks came after a meeting between President William Ruto and former President Uhuru Kenyatta, an event he lauded as a demonstration of patriotism and the need for unity in leadership.
Kuria, a former critic of the BBI, acknowledged his earlier opposition was misguided.
He urged key political leaders, including Ruto, Uhuru, and Raila Odinga, to set aside their differences and work collaboratively to reinstate the initiative.
He described the BBI as a necessary framework to deliver long-term solutions to Kenya’s governance challenges.
“The constant reliance on handshakes and temporary political agreements has proven unsustainable.
The BBI was designed to create a more inclusive and responsive constitution, and it’s time to revisit it.
We need a constitution that speaks to the evolving realities of our nation,” Kuria said.
The meeting between Ruto and Uhuru has been widely interpreted as a sign of easing political tensions.
Kuria praised Uhuru’s commitment to prioritizing the country's stability over personal or political differences.
He emphasized that the collaboration between political adversaries marks a significant departure from traditional power struggles and a step toward a more cooperative approach.
Kuria’s advocacy for reviving the BBI highlights his shift in perspective regarding Kenya’s governance.
Initially proposed by Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga, the initiative sought to address issues such as electoral reforms, resource allocation, and inclusivity.
Despite its collapse following a court ruling in 2021, Kuria believes that the current political environment demands its revival.
In addition to supporting BBI, Kuria expressed regret over leaving the Jubilee Party, urging Mount Kenya’s political leaders to unify under a single party.
He called for a reformation similar to the consolidation that led to Jubilee’s formation in 2016.
Kuria pledged that his Chama Cha Kazi party would support efforts to restore Jubilee as the political umbrella for the region.
He argued that regional unity is crucial for the area’s political relevance and national influence.
