Kibwezi West Member of Parliament (MP), Mwengi Mutuse, has made explosive allegations linking former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua to the spate of abductions targeting critics of President William Ruto's administration.
Mutuse accused Gachagua and his loyalists of orchestrating the disappearances of several individuals to tarnish the reputation of the government and stir dissent among the Kenyan public.
In a bold press briefing on Monday, December 30, Mutuse stated that he had received credible information suggesting that Gachagua, along with his associates within the government, was behind the abductions.
According to the MP, this was part of a calculated political strategy to paint the government in a negative light and incite opposition to President Ruto’s leadership.
“It is being alleged that he is the one organizing the abductions in order to create an image that the government is bad so that he can advance his political agenda,” Mutuse claimed.
He further asserted that Gachagua’s efforts were aimed at garnering public sympathy and fostering dissent against the ruling Kenya Kwanza coalition.
Mutuse called on the authorities to investigate Gachagua and his allies, urging swift and decisive action if evidence links them to the abductions.
He also challenged Gachagua to publicly clear his name, demanding an explanation for his alleged involvement in these disturbing events.
The wave of abductions has sparked widespread fear and outrage across the country, with several youth, particularly critics of the government, vanishing under suspicious circumstances.
The disappearances have been widely blamed on the National Police Service, prompting calls for President Ruto to intervene and ensure that those responsible are held accountable. The MP also questioned Gachagua’s sudden shift in narrative regarding the abductions.
Gachagua had previously cast doubt on President Ruto's promise to end the crisis, suggesting that the situation was being mismanaged and was a consequence of the government’s failure to act.
Mutuse seized on this inconsistency, alleging that Gachagua’s criticism was part of a larger, more sinister plot.
In response to these accusations, Mutuse has reiterated his stance, insisting that Gachagua and his associates are attempting to manipulate the narrative for political gain.
As the investigation into the abductions continues, the pressure is mounting on law enforcement to act and determine whether these claims hold any merit.
The tension surrounding the abductions continues to grow, with many citizens and political figures demanding justice for the missing individuals and accountability for those responsible.
Whether Mutuse’s allegations will lead to concrete action remains to be seen, but the case has already sparked a national conversation on the state of political dissent in Kenya.
