The government of Kenya has announced plans to recruit 5,000 police officers in March 2024, marking a significant move to bolster the country’s security efforts and address the growing unemployment rate.
This recruitment comes after a two-year hiatus in police officer hiring, with the last recruitment exercise taking place in March 2022.
Deputy President Kithure Kindiki made the announcement on December 15, 2024, during an interdenominational service in Lodwar, Turkana County.
He emphasized that the recruitment drive is essential for strengthening national security, particularly in regions experiencing high levels of insecurity, such as the northeastern parts of Kenya.
The Deputy President highlighted the government's commitment to enhancing law enforcement capacity and ensuring a more secure environment for citizens.
The recruitment drive is part of a broader effort by the government to create more employment opportunities within the public sector.
Kindiki underscored that the government is actively working to address the unemployment crisis by expanding job prospects not only within the security sector but also in the informal sector.
This initiative aligns with President William Ruto’s broader vision of improving public service delivery and economic empowerment for the youth.
The announcement comes after the government faced significant financial challenges in 2023, which led to the postponement of planned recruitment for both police and prison officers.
The delay was primarily due to financial constraints, as the government struggled to manage its increasing public debt while maintaining essential services.
However, with the economic situation showing signs of improvement, the recruitment process for police officers will proceed as planned in March 2024.
Kindiki also revealed that President Ruto will soon announce a new Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Interior.
The new CS will work closely with the Deputy President to continue building on the security achievements made during Kindiki’s tenure as Interior Minister.
This leadership transition is expected to further strengthen the country’s security strategies.
