Catherine Wanjeri, a journalist at Kameme TV and Radio, has been honored with the 2024 Freedom Warrior Award for her incredible bravery after she was shot while covering the Gen-Z anti-government protests in July 2024.
Wanjeri was shot in the thigh by police officers while standing by the road in Nakuru CBD during the protests.
The shooting left her in pain, but she was quickly taken to Valley Hospital for medical treatment.
Despite the trauma she experienced, Wanjeri has not given up on her pursuit of justice.
She has continued to speak out about the attack and remains determined to get the justice she deserves.
Wanjeri sees this award not just as a personal achievement but as a symbol of hope for press freedom in Kenya.
She believes it is important to keep fighting for the rights of journalists, especially in a country where press freedom is often under threat.
Wanjeri’s award was presented by the Kenya Editors Guild (KEG), which recognized her for her courage and strong commitment to the truth.
In an interview, Wanjeri expressed her gratitude, saying that the recognition was a huge honor.
She also stated that it gave her more strength to continue her fight for press freedom.
However, Wanjeri also pointed out that her case has not been properly addressed by any government or private institution.
She remains hopeful that, with the support of press freedom organizations, she will receive justice.
Wanjeri's determination has made her a role model for many young and female journalists, who look up to her as a symbol of resilience and courage in the face of adversity.
KEG President Zubeidah Kananu praised Wanjeri for her strength, noting that many would have given up after such an attack, but Wanjeri stood firm.
Kananu assured that KEG will continue to fight for justice for Wanjeri and hold those responsible for the attack accountable.
