On Sunday, December 22, 2024, Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung’wah made strong remarks about plans to "cleanse" the Parliament buildings after they were stormed by Gen Z protesters on June 25, 2024.
Ichung’wah expressed disappointment over the behavior of the youth during the protest, particularly the disrespectful language they used against their leaders and their country.
“Some of the words our children were using against our leaders and their own country are things none of us ever imagined,” Ichung’wah said. He blamed both parents and the church for failing to instill moral values in the younger generation.
“It is clear that both parents and the church have not done enough to guide our youth,” he added.
The MP announced his plans to speak with the Speaker of the National Assembly, Moses Wetang'ula, to discuss a “cleansing” of Parliament.
“I’m going to speak with Speaker Wetang’ula so that we can organize a cleansing of Parliament buildings,” he stated.
This move, according to Ichung’wah, would help restore the dignity of Parliament after the chaos caused by the protests.
Ichung’wah also criticized some church leaders, accusing them of abandoning their spiritual duties in favor of politics.
He said, “The challenge we have is that even our church leaders have abandoned their work of guiding the nation in a godly manner and have become politicians.” In his view, church leaders should focus on guiding people spiritually, not engaging in political activities.
At the same time, the lawmaker praised President William Ruto for including new faces in his administration, believing this will help promote unity across the country.
“We thank and congratulate the President for continuing to broaden the government so that we can unite all people in this country,” he said.
Ichung’wah’s comments came just a day after President Ruto called on parents to take more responsibility for the moral upbringing of their children. The president also emphasized the importance of the church’s role in guiding the youth.
