Lilian Nyambura Mbugua, a 28-year-old brand manager with East African Breweries Limited (EABL), who went missing from her family home in Gikono, Kabati, Murang’a County, on December 23, 2024, has been found alive.
Her disappearance had sparked widespread concern, but early on Tuesday, December 31, her family confirmed that she had been located at a filling station in Maragua Town, Murang’a, just after midnight.
According to George Njuguna, Lilian’s uncle, she was found in a weakened and disoriented state.
“She was weak and confused,” Njuguna reported, adding that Lilian had approached the attendants at the station, asking them to call her mother.
Lilian was subsequently taken to a nearby health center, where health officials noted she appeared to be disturbed.
Plans were immediately made for her to be transferred to Nairobi for further medical evaluation as authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding her disappearance.
Lilian had traveled to her mother's home in Kabati for the Christmas holidays, and all had seemed well until the evening of December 23.
The family had spent time together, including attending a church service on Sunday, December 22, and enjoying a breakfast and lunch on Monday.
However, later that afternoon, Lilian stepped out for what appeared to be an ordinary walk around the gated community where her family lives.
At approximately 5 p.m., she left the compound wearing a headscarf and slippers, with no indication that anything was amiss. Her mother was busy with house chores in the backyard at the time. However, Lilian did not return.
Upon realizing she was missing, the family discovered that she had left both her mobile phones, car keys, and personal items—such as her laptop and identity documents—at home.
Desperate to find her, the family reported her disappearance to the Gikono police post on December 24, and later to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Kenol.
Investigations revealed that Lilian had made three phone calls on the evening of Saturday, December 28, just days before she went missing. However, there were no further leads on her whereabouts until her discovery early on Tuesday morning.
The investigation into Lilian’s disappearance had been challenging for law enforcement. As Constable Patrick Maina of the Gikono police explained,
“It is a hard inquiry because if we had a phone we could track or a known motor vehicle we could trace, it would be easier to narrow down our lines of investigation.”
Fortunately, Lilian has now been found safe, and her family is relieved that she will receive the necessary medical attention.
The ongoing investigation aims to uncover the details behind her sudden and mysterious disappearance.
