A 5-year-old girl has tragically died in Migori County after falling into an open pit left by road contractors.
The heartbreaking incident took place in Suna East, in Suna-Sagegi location.
According to Suna-Sagegi location Chief Sila Ogutu, the young girl was swimming in the large pit when she drowned.
She had been with four other children, who managed to escape after they started shouting for help.
Locals quickly rushed to their aid, rescuing the other children, but sadly, the young girl could not be saved in time.
The open pit was left behind by contractors who had been harvesting murram for road construction in the area.
Chief Ogutu stated that this pit, along with many others in the region, has become a serious safety risk. He called on the road contractors to refill these pits to prevent further accidents.
"These open pits are now death traps for the children and even adults in the area," said Ogutu.
He emphasized that contractors must be held accountable for leaving such dangerous conditions behind after their work is done.
After the tragic event, the body of the little girl was recovered and taken to the mortuary for a postmortem examination.
The police have launched an investigation to understand the circumstances surrounding her death and to ensure that the responsible parties are held accountable.
Chief Ogutu also reminded parents to be extra cautious with their children, especially during the rainy season.
He urged them to ensure that children are always supervised, particularly near dangerous areas such as construction sites and open pits.
The community is in deep mourning after the loss of the young girl, and her family is devastated by the tragedy.
