A tragic incident occurred in Rongo town, Migori County, on Christmas Day when a seven-storey building, still under construction, collapsed, trapping several people under the rubble.
Rescue operations are currently underway, but the number of individuals caught in the debris remains unclear.
Migori County Secretary, Oscar Olima, provided an update on the situation, confirming that the emergency response teams are on the ground.
"We have excavators at the scene, ambulances on-site, and first responders are also there," Olima said.
He also mentioned that one woman had already been rescued from the rubble and taken to the hospital, but it remains uncertain how many more people were inside the building at the time of the collapse.
The building, which was still under construction, had workers inside when it fell.
However, authorities have yet to confirm the exact number of people trapped.
"We have people at the scene, there were some workers there, but as of now, we still don’t know how many are trapped," Olima stated.
This uncertainty has left residents and families anxious as they wait for further information.
Rongo Subcounty Police Commander, Salim Fundi, is also present at the site, overseeing the ongoing operations.
He reassured the public that updates would be provided as more information becomes available.
The police have been working closely with local authorities and rescue teams to ensure that all possible efforts are made to save those still trapped.
The collapse has drawn attention from local residents, who are watching from a distance as emergency workers carry out their tasks.
The community remains hopeful for more survivors to be rescued from the debris.
At the time of writing, the rescue operations are still in progress, with authorities urging anyone with information about people who might have been inside the building to come forward.
The incident has raised concerns about construction safety in the region, and authorities are expected to investigate the cause of the collapse once the rescue efforts are completed.
