Residents of Nyali, Mombasa, were left in shock when the body of a man was found floating along the shores of the Indian Ocean on Thursday, December 12, 2024.
The discovery occurred early in the morning, sending ripples of concern across the community.
The lifeless body was spotted by locals who immediately raised an alarm.
The prompt action of the residents led to a swift response from Mombasa County’s rescue and fire department.
Officers quickly arrived at the scene and worked to recover the body from the water.
The deceased was then transported to the Coast General Hospital mortuary for preservation, pending identification by his family members.
Ibrahim Basafar, the Chief Officer of the county’s rescue department, confirmed the incident and expressed the urgency with which the body was retrieved.
"We responded to the alarm raised by the residents, and the body was safely recovered," Basafar explained.
He added that the authorities are currently seeking assistance from the public to identify the man and locate his family.
The tragic event has left the Nyali community in mourning, with many speculating about the circumstances surrounding the man’s death.
As of now, there are no leads on the cause of death, and authorities are awaiting any further information that may help in solving the mystery.
This incident follows another heartbreaking tragedy that occurred in October 2024.
In that case, a 32-year-old man, Geoffrey Wanyama, tragically drowned while swimming at Senti Kumi Beach in Mombasa.
Wanyama had taken his four-year-old son to the beach for a swim, but strong ocean currents swept him away.
The young boy was later found alone by a Good Samaritan, but his father remained missing.
Three days later, Wanyama’s body was discovered floating near the Likoni ferry crossing, and he was later identified by his family.
The authorities continue to urge beachgoers to exercise caution and adhere to safety guidelines when swimming in the Indian Ocean, particularly in areas known for strong currents.
The rescue teams are working tirelessly to ensure the safety of residents and visitors in coastal regions, but incidents like these highlight the unpredictable nature of the ocean.
