Tensions continue to rise in the Mount Kenya region as a local Member of Parliament (MP) was apprehended by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Monday in Nyeri County.
The legislator was taken into custody on allegations of making inflammatory remarks during a public event, a move that has further polarized opinions across the political divide.
While the MP’s identity remains undisclosed, the remarks in question reportedly criticized President William Ruto’s government, accusing it of neglecting the region's economic priorities.
The DCI claims the statements were inciteful, with the potential to spark unrest and disrupt the unity of the area.
"The statements made could easily lead to instability in the region. Public leaders must exercise responsibility in their speech," commented a senior DCI officer involved in the arrest.
The MP is currently being held at Nyeri Police Station, awaiting formal charges related to incitement.
Observers believe this development reflects growing dissatisfaction within Mount Kenya, where some leaders feel overlooked in terms of development and political inclusion under the Kenya Kwanza government.
Critics of the arrest argue that it marks a dangerous precedent for freedom of speech.
A fellow legislator from Mount Kenya described it as an attempt to stifle legitimate criticism of the government.
"Democracy depends on open and constructive dialogue. Silencing dissenting voices undermines accountability," they stated.
However, allies of the Ruto administration have defended the move, emphasizing the need for leaders to maintain national cohesion.
A senator allied with the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) reiterated the importance of responsible speech, noting, "Freedom of speech should not be used as a tool to incite division or unrest."
This incident has ignited mixed reactions among Kenyans.
Some citizens see the arrest as an essential step to uphold peace and unity, while others criticize it as part of a larger pattern of suppressing dissent.
Political analysts warn that such arrests may deepen divisions in an already polarized political climate.
