Joseph Kamau, a 37-year-old man from Murang'a County, has astonished his community by building an airplane from scratch.
His incredible project, which he started in December 2023, has taken almost a year to develop, though it is not yet complete.
While the airplane can't fly yet, Kamau proudly shared that it works well on the ground.
Kamau, who has no formal training in engineering, relied solely on his imagination to bring his dream to life.
“I’ve never studied engineering or worked on planes before, but I’ve always loved the idea of flying,” he said.
"The closest I’ve come to a real airplane is seeing one fly high in the sky.
I just imagined how they work and decided to try building one myself."
His approach reflects his belief that "imagination is more important than knowledge," a motto he even wrote on the plane.
He added, “I just want to see a real plane up close one day, compare it with mine, and I’ll be happy with that.”
Kamau’s dream isn’t about making a working airplane right away but about the joy of building something that reflects his creativity and passion for aviation.
The project hasn’t been easy. Kamau shared that being unemployed has made it difficult to fund the construction. “I buy the parts one by one, and that's why it’s taken so long.
I’ve never calculated how much I’ve spent, because if I did, I might lose the motivation to keep going,” he explained.
Instead, Kamau continues to work on the airplane when he can, focusing on the joy of creating something from his own hands.
Despite the challenges, Kamau remains hopeful. He has reached out to well-wishers for support, asking for help to either find a job or receive assistance to continue building airplanes.
“I’m unemployed, and I do various hustles to survive, but my true passion is airplanes. If anyone can help me, I’d be grateful,” he said. Those who want to offer assistance can contact him at 0748219936.
