Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has urged graduates of the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) to take an active role in promoting the Social Health Authority (SHA).
Speaking at their graduation ceremony held on Thursday, December 5, 2024, at the Kasarani Sports Complex, Kindiki emphasized the importance of universal health coverage and the role of young professionals in its implementation.
The SHA, a newly introduced health insurance scheme, aims to make healthcare accessible to all Kenyans, regardless of their financial situation.
Kindiki acknowledged that the program has faced challenges since its launch but assured the audience that the government is committed to improving its efficiency and addressing concerns raised by the public.
During his address, the Deputy President appealed to the graduates to become advocates for the SHA.
He emphasized that the initiative is not just for those in formal employment but is designed to benefit all citizens.
“We need you to step up as ambassadors for this program. Help us register as many Kenyans as possible. This scheme is not limited to salaried individuals; it is for everyone,” Kindiki said.
He expressed confidence in the graduates' ability to spread awareness about the program, which he believes will significantly improve access to healthcare during medical emergencies.
Despite its noble intentions, the SHA has faced criticism from various quarters.
Some citizens have raised concerns about its effectiveness, and organizations like the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) have publicly opposed its implementation.
NCCK Chairperson Elias Otieno Agola recently urged Kenyans to reject the scheme, citing inefficiencies.
Further controversy arose following reports of the tragic death of a university student who allegedly failed to pay SHA registration fees.
Additionally, the dismissal of SHA’s CEO, Elijah Wachira, shortly after the program's launch, raised questions about its leadership and direction.
Kindiki reassured the public that the government is listening to feedback and taking steps to address the issues raised.
He emphasized the administration’s commitment to ensuring the SHA becomes a functional and inclusive healthcare solution for all Kenyans.
