Gibson Murage, the visionary behind Modern Furniture Pacific, watched helplessly as his Ruiru furniture store went up in flames.
The fire, which destroyed furniture worth millions, has been a devastating blow to the businessman, who rose from selling second-hand clothes to building a thriving furniture empire with branches across Nairobi, Ruiru, and Nakuru.
As thick smoke filled the sky, Murage stood alongside his friend Mbote Njogu, grappling with the enormity of the loss.
Amid the chaos, Murage voiced a heart-wrenching question that struck at the core of his pain: “Who or what have I wronged?”
Njogu later described how this single question encapsulated Murage’s despair, reflecting the deep emotional toll the fire had taken.
The showroom, once home to high-end furniture like sofas, beds, and dining tables, is now reduced to ashes.
For an entrepreneur who has inspired many through his hard work and determination, the fire represents a painful setback.
Yet, amidst the sorrow, hope glimmers in the form of insurance, a safeguard Murage had wisely secured for his business.
Entrepreneur Mithamo Muchiri took to social media to stress the importance of insuring businesses against such unforeseen disasters.
“Once your business stabilizes, insure it against fire and theft,” he advised.
Muchiri outlined the steps Murage needs to take to recover his losses: filing a police report to obtain an abstract, undergoing insurance assessments and investigations, and finally, receiving compensation.
If the process runs smoothly, Murage could rebuild within a month.
Despite the devastating loss, Kenyans have rallied around Murage, offering words of encouragement and hope.
Many have highlighted his journey from a small-scale mtumba trader in Nyeri County to a furniture mogul as proof of his resilience.
Social media has been flooded with messages urging him to remain strong and reminding him that better days lie ahead.
