A shocking revelation in Nyeri County has sparked conversations about cultural practices and their importance in the Kikuyu community.
A 65-year-old man recently underwent circumcision after his lover reported him to community elders for failing to undergo the traditional rite of passage during his youth.
Circumcision is a deeply rooted custom in the Kikuyu culture, symbolizing the transition from boyhood to manhood.
It is also a prerequisite for men to be recognized as community elders (Kiama).
The man’s omission of this rite raised eyebrows, particularly since he had been serving as a respected elder within the community.
The issue came to light when the man’s lover informed the elders after discovering he had never been circumcised.
Elders, shocked by the revelation, conducted an investigation to confirm the claim.
Upon verification, they arranged for the procedure to be performed.
Reports indicate that the circumcision was successfully carried out, and the man is now recuperating at home under his wife’s care.
Gerald Kung’u, an elder from Kieni, expressed his surprise, stating, “We were shocked to discover one of us had never undergone circumcision.
As his peers, we had no idea. After confirming the reports, we supported him through the process.”
The revelation not only embarrassed the man but also disappointed the elders, who emphasized the importance of upholding cultural traditions.
In the Kikuyu community, circumcision is not merely a physical procedure but a significant milestone that validates a man’s readiness to take on adult responsibilities and leadership roles.
