Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka on Saturday, December 14, 2024, took center stage in Machakos, leading a rallying cry against President William Ruto's administration.
The chants of "Ruto Must Go" echoed through Kenyatta Stadium during the second edition of Governor Wavinya Ndeti’s football tournament.
The event, which initially focused on sports and youth empowerment, turned political as Kalonzo addressed a large gathering of residents.
Accompanied by Governor Ndeti, Kalonzo accused the Kenya Kwanza government of enforcing policies detrimental to the livelihoods of ordinary Kenyans.
The crowd joined in his calls for the president to vacate office, raising their hands in agreement as they repeated the slogan.
Kalonzo used the platform to highlight key issues he believes are suppressing citizens, including the recent government push to vaccinate millions of livestock.
The initiative aims to protect 22 million cattle from Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) and 50 million sheep and goats from Peste des petits ruminants (PPR).
However, Kalonzo dismissed it as a misplaced priority, questioning its necessity while Kenyans face economic hardships.
Instead, Kalonzo urged the government to focus on youth empowerment, particularly as the country prepares to co-host the 2027 African Cup of Nations (AFCON).
He commended Governor Ndeti for organizing the tournament and encouraged leaders to invest in programs that directly benefit young people.
The Wiper leader further emphasized the importance of youth participation in the political process.
He urged Generation Z to acquire national identification cards in January and register as voters to ensure they can influence the country’s leadership in future elections.
“The youth are the backbone of our nation, and their participation in voting will determine the direction this country takes,” Kalonzo said.
Governor Ndeti, who stood beside Kalonzo during the chants, reiterated her commitment to sports as a means of nurturing talent and addressing unemployment.
The governor’s tournament, now in its second edition, drew significant participation and underscored the role of sports in community development.
