The debate, set to take place on December 13, 2024, at the African Union headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, will see Odinga face two other candidates: Mahmoud Ali Youssouf from Djibouti and Richard Randriamandrato from Madagascar.
The debate is a key event leading up to the AUC Chairperson elections scheduled for February 2025.
It offers the candidates an opportunity to present their vision for Africa's future and discuss how they plan to tackle critical issues affecting the continent, including peace, security, and economic integration.
Raila Odinga's bid for the AUC Chairperson role has received strong backing from the Kenyan government.
During the celebration of Kenya’s 60 years of diplomatic relations in Nairobi, Prime Cabinet Secretary and Foreign Affairs CS Musalia Mudavadi endorsed Odinga’s candidacy, highlighting his qualifications and leadership experience.
"Kenya has maintained an impeccable record in humanitarian support, peace, and security initiatives regionally and globally.
Raila Odinga represents Kenya’s commitment to upholding this legacy," said Mudavadi.
He added that Odinga’s pan-African credentials make him the ideal candidate to succeed the incumbent Chairperson, Moussa Faki.
The Mjadala Afrika Leadership debate is expected to set the tone for the upcoming elections, providing a stage for the three candidates to articulate their priorities and strategies.
Odinga is likely to focus on his vision of promoting peace, unity, and shared prosperity across Africa.
His long-standing involvement in African politics and his reputation as a champion of democracy are key strengths in his campaign.
Mudavadi expressed confidence that Odinga’s leadership would significantly benefit the African Union and the continent as a whole.
"We believe Raila Odinga’s leadership will contribute immensely to Africa’s shared prosperity and help champion the causes of peace and unity," he stated.
As the continent watches, the debate will provide insights into the leadership styles and aspirations of the candidates.
The winner of the February 2025 elections will play a critical role in shaping Africa’s political and economic future.
