Speaking at a church service at P.C.E.A Mwiki in Kasarani, Nairobi, on December 8, 2024, Gachagua emphasized that the credibility of the upcoming elections hinges on having a fully functional electoral commission in place well before the election date.
Gachagua pointed out that according to the law, the IEBC should be reconstituted at least three years before the next general election.
With less than three years remaining, he expressed worry over the apparent delay, which he believes could lead to doubts about the election’s fairness.
"An election is as credible as the process. The electoral commission must be in place three years before the election, now we have two and a half years remaining, and there is no IEBC," Gachagua said.
The former Deputy President’s comments reflect growing concerns among Kenyans, who have taken to social media to push for the swift establishment of the new commission.
The hashtag #appointiebcnow has been trending as citizens call on the government to act. Gachagua’s appeal to President Ruto comes amid mounting pressure, with critics accusing the Kenya Kwanza government of intentionally delaying the process.
The process to reconstitute the IEBC has been delayed by legal challenges, with two court cases currently pending, which have delayed the formation of the panel responsible for selecting new commissioners. As a result, the earliest the process can begin is in January 2025.
During the church service, Gachagua also took the opportunity to praise his allies who have publicly criticized the government and encouraged the church to continue calling out any malpractice within the administration.
His appearance at the service was his first public outing since a hostile incident at a funeral in Limuru in late November, which he described as a "well-planned attempt on my life."
