President William Ruto has announced that the dualling of the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway will start in 2025.
The construction project, which aims to ease the traffic congestion that has recently plagued this busy road, will be carried out by a private contractor under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) program.
The president made this announcement during a church service at AIC Kipkorgot in Uasin Gishu County.
He stated that the road construction would happen in two phases. The first phase will focus on dualling the road from Nairobi to Nakuru, while the second phase will extend from Nakuru to Malaba.
Speaking about the project, Ruto explained that it had faced delays due to a breach of contract by a French company that had initially been involved in the road's revamp.
"We had a PPP program with a French company, but it did not work out," Ruto said. "However, we have alternatives that we are working on as a government."
Despite the setbacks, Ruto was optimistic about the project's future.
“The commitment I want to give you is that next year, we will begin the construction of the dual carriageway from Nairobi to Nakuru first, and then from Nakuru to Malaba," he said.
This announcement has come at a time when traffic on the highway has been particularly challenging, especially in sections such as Rironi-Naivasha-Nakuru Road and the Rironi-Mai Mahiu-Naivasha Road.
The government, through the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), has been advising motorists to exercise patience and adhere to traffic rules to avoid delays.
KeNHA has also been working with traffic police to help manage the flow of vehicles in these busy areas, ensuring that road users reach their destinations safely.
Many Kenyans who regularly use the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway will be happy to know that the project will help reduce the long hours spent stuck in traffic.
For example, drivers who have had to deal with delays on the highway can look forward to quicker and smoother travel once the roadworks are completed.
In addition to the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway project, President Ruto assured Kenyans that the government is focusing on improving other roads in the country that are still under construction or facing delays.
He encouraged people to remain patient as the government works to address these infrastructure issues.
