A tragic road accident in Mayamaya, Bahi District, Tanzania, has left three people dead, including an elderly woman, a nurse, and the driver of a Toyota Land Cruiser.
The accident occurred while Patricia Paulo, who was pregnant, was being rushed to a referral hospital in Dodoma.
Her elderly sister, Issabela Malimo, was accompanying her in the ambulance. The accident also claimed the life of Rhoda Mitinda, a nurse who was with them during the journey.
The ambulance, driven by Mazoea Nampanga, was speeding because of the emergency nature of the situation.
Patricia was in labor and needed urgent medical attention. However, as they were traveling, the ambulance crashed into a Toyota Land Cruiser that had been parked on the roadside.
The crash happened when the ambulance driver lost control and hit the parked car from behind.
According to Dodoma Regional Police Commander George Katabazi, the elderly woman, the nurse, and the driver of the Land Cruiser died at the scene of the accident.
The police were alerted immediately, and officers were sent to the site to confirm the details of the incident.
Both the ambulance driver and Patricia Paulo were taken to the hospital, where they received medical treatment.
Fortunately, Patricia survived the accident, but the loss of her sister and the others involved has left the family and the community devastated.
Following the crash, Commander Katabazi urged all drivers, particularly those operating emergency vehicles like ambulances, to be more cautious on the roads.
He stressed the importance of safety, especially when driving in high-pressure situations, as emergency vehicles often speed to save lives.
The accident has sparked sorrow and condolences on social media, with many people sharing their grief for the victims.
