In a bold statement on December 8, 2024, Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka called for the resignation of President William Ruto should protests against his administration escalate.
Speaking during a church service, Kalonzo, a prominent opposition figure, urged both the police and the army to take decisive action if the situation worsens.
“If the next maandamano comes to chase the winds of lies, winds that despise the church… I advise the army and police… if you see things are bad, tell Ruto to leave,” Kalonzo said, reflecting on the political climate in the country.
His remarks were a direct response to the ongoing tensions between the government and opposition, with protests and calls for reforms intensifying.
Kalonzo’s comments come amid rising unrest in the country, with opposition leaders continuing to challenge Ruto’s administration over various issues, including government policies and electoral concerns.
The Wiper leader, who is also a key figure in the Azimio coalition, emphasized the need for change, citing the successes of other nations in toppling ruling regimes.
His statements hint at a growing frustration with the current political leadership and a desire for a shift in governance.
In addition to calling for Ruto’s resignation, Kalonzo revealed plans to form a major political coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He vowed to unite various political parties and leaders across the country with the goal of challenging Ruto’s rule in the next election.
Kalonzo’s remarks on Sunday underscored his commitment to building a formidable alliance capable of securing a win in 2027.
Echoing Kalonzo’s sentiments, Jubilee Party Secretary-General Jeremiah Kioni and former Limuru MP Peter Mwathi also pledged to rally support for the coalition, particularly focusing on securing votes from the Mt. Kenya region, which remains a crucial swing vote in the country’s political landscape.
Kioni stressed the importance of unity, arguing that the region must come together to effectively challenge the government.
Kalonzo’s call for unity in the opposition comes at a time when the political landscape in Kenya is becoming increasingly polarized.
As 2027 approaches, the formation of alliances and strategic moves within the opposition are set to play a critical role in the country's future direction.
Kalonzo’s leadership in this effort could be a defining factor in the next election cycle.
