Kiambu Senator Karungo Thang'wa has hinted that many Members of Parliament (MPs) from the Mt Kenya region, elected under the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party, are planning to resign and seek fresh mandates under a new political party.
Thang'wa, an ally of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, stated that the formation of a new political outfit is imminent and would serve to displace UDA’s dominance in the region.
Thang'wa suggested that the new party, which he indicated is being steered by Gachagua, would be inclusive and more attuned to the needs of the Mt Kenya electorate.
This proposed shift could spell a major political realignment in the region, traditionally a stronghold for UDA.
The senator made it clear that if the new party is launched, many MPs from Mt Kenya who currently belong to UDA would leave the ruling party in droves.
They would then seek a fresh mandate from voters under the new party, which is being shaped to be more responsive to local concerns.
A critical factor influencing this move, according to Thang'wa, is the reconstitution of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
He argued that if the president is serious about retaining the support of Mt Kenya, he must address concerns surrounding the IEBC.
Thang'wa believes that a restructuring of the electoral body would result in many MPs abandoning UDA and joining the new political outfit.
The senator emphasized that ignoring the political dynamics of the Mt Kenya region would be a grave mistake, as it remains a key player in national politics.
This shift comes at a time when Gachagua is making moves to reshape the political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Recent statements from the former deputy president reveal that he is open to forging alliances with other political leaders, including Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka.
