Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has downplayed the significance of the recent meeting between President William Ruto and retired President Uhuru Kenyatta at the latter’s Ichaweri home.
The closed-door session, held on December 9, sparked speculation about potential political realignments, particularly in the politically significant Mt. Kenya region.
The meeting, which lasted several hours, comes at a time when Gachagua is working to strengthen his foothold in the region following his impeachment earlier this year.
Political observers have suggested that Ruto’s meeting with Uhuru could pose a challenge to Gachagua’s ambitions.
However, Gachagua dismissed such concerns, insisting that leaders have the right to meet and that such interactions do not necessarily dictate political outcomes.
In an interview, Gachagua maintained that the meeting has no bearing on his plans, hinting at a significant political announcement he intends to make in January.
“We cannot dictate who meets who in this life,” Gachagua remarked. “I actually encourage leaders to engage and unite for the common good.
We, too, have been holding meetings, and at the start of the year, we will make a major declaration that reflects our efforts.”
The impeachment of Gachagua has not deterred his focus on rallying support in Mt. Kenya.
Despite being ousted from office, he remains an influential figure in the region’s politics and is intent on consolidating his support base ahead of the 2027 General Election.
His upcoming announcement is expected to set the stage for his next political move.
Meanwhile, the Ruto-Uhuru meeting has drawn criticism from some quarters.
Embakasi North MP James Gakuya, a member of Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA), questioned the rationale behind the visit.
Speaking on a televised program, Gakuya argued that Mt. Kenya voters are not influenced by individual leaders, pointing out Uhuru Kenyatta’s failed attempts to sway the region toward Raila Odinga in 2022.
“The region has shown that it makes independent decisions. This meeting will not change anything,” Gakuya stated.
