Supreme Court Judge Isaac Lenaola recently raised serious concerns about the judiciary's technological infrastructure, particularly focusing on the e-filing system's failure during the impeachment case of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
Speaking at an event on December 6, 2024, Lenaola highlighted the vulnerability of the system, which malfunctioned at a critical point in Gachagua’s case.
His comments shed light on the potential consequences of such failures, especially as Kenya approaches the 2027 General Election.
During the Gachagua impeachment case, petitioners accused judicial officials of tampering with the e-filing system, which disrupted the legal proceedings.
Lenaola questioned why the online filing platform, which had been protected by firewalls before 2022, suddenly became vulnerable.
He urged Kenyans to consider the implications of such a breakdown during the 2027 elections, stressing the importance of ensuring the security and reliability of the system as the country heads into another highly anticipated election.
Lenaola’s remarks have drawn attention for their boldness, as he directly addressed a major flaw within the judiciary system.
His call for action reflects his commitment to safeguarding the integrity of Kenya’s electoral process and judicial system.
In particular, he urged the public to think critically about what might happen if such technological failures occur during the next election, a time when the integrity of the voting process will be of utmost importance.
Justice Isaac Lenaola’s career is marked by a long-standing dedication to law and justice.
After earning his law degree from the University of Nairobi, he went on to serve in various legal capacities, including as a commissioner for the People’s Commission of Kenya and the Constitution of Kenya Review Commission.
Before joining the Supreme Court, he was a resident judge in several High Courts across Kenya, including Machakos, Embu, Meru, and Kakamega.
Lenaola has also chaired key judicial bodies, such as the Kenya Magistrates and Judges Association.
Kenyans have expressed support for Lenaola’s remarks, with many praising him for his courage in addressing issues that could impact the country’s future.
