Raila Odinga, the leader of the opposition in Kenya, has accused President William Ruto’s government of taking the country back to the "dark days" of political repression.
His statement comes after reports of several political activists and critics being abducted or harassed by individuals believed to be linked to the government.
"You are taking us back to the dark days," Raila said during a public event.
His words were a direct reference to the past when critics of the government would mysteriously disappear or face violence, especially during times of authoritarian rule.
Odinga condemned these actions, calling them a serious threat to Kenya's democracy and freedom of speech.
This criticism is in response to recent claims from opposition members and human rights groups, who allege that individuals critical of the government have been forcibly abducted by security officers or other unidentified persons.
These incidents have sparked fears of a return to a time when dissent was not tolerated, and many people were afraid to speak their minds.
"You cannot silence people like this. We have come too far as a country to allow this," Odinga added.
He emphasized the importance of protecting the constitutional rights of all Kenyans, including the right to express differing political views without fear of retaliation.
The government has not yet made a public response to these accusations, but government officials have defended the actions of security forces, saying that they are acting within the law to address security concerns.
However, critics argue that such actions are being used to target those who oppose the government, rather than addressing real threats to national security.
As the controversy grows, human rights organizations have called for an independent investigation into the abductions.
Many believe that Kenya’s international reputation could be at risk if the country’s government does not ensure the protection of its citizens' rights.
The tensions between the government and opposition continue to rise.
