Nicholas Nalyanya Soita, a young man from Kitale in Trans Nzoia County, is struggling to move on after his wife abandoned him and took everything in their house.
The shocking betrayal has left him devastated, as he never imagined his marriage would end this way.
"I came back home for the holidays, only to find the house completely empty," Nalyanya said. "She took everything furniture, utensils, electronics leaving me with nothing."
Nalyanya met his wife, Maria (not her real name), in high school, but they only started dating in university.
"She had joined a year before me, and we couldn’t help but fall in love," he recalled.
However, their relationship took an unexpected turn when Maria became pregnant just a month into dating.
With no choice but to support her, Nalyanya moved in with her. "Her family told me she already had two other children, which I didn’t know about.
They said they couldn’t take care of another child, so I had to take responsibility," he explained.
Realizing he needed to provide for his new family, he made a tough decision.
"I deferred my studies to get a job so that I could support her education. I wanted her to finish school before I returned to my studies," he said.
After Maria graduated, Nalyanya helped her secure a job, hoping they would now support each other. However, things didn’t go as expected.
"I went back to school in Kisumu at Maseno University, so I had to leave my wife and child in Kitale," he said. "I couldn’t work full-time anymore, so money became a problem."
Despite Maria earning an income, she refused to help financially. "She always said it was a man's job to provide for the family.
Sometimes we had no food, yet she had money in her account," he said in frustration.
In 2024, Nalyanya focused on finishing school while doing small jobs to send money home.
"I was sending her KSh 1,500 every week. I had no idea I was sending money to someone who had already left me," he revealed.
When he returned home in December, he found an empty house.
"She didn’t pick up my calls, and her family said she was in Nairobi," he said. "She left without a word, and we had no serious argument to cause this."
Despite his pain, Nalyanya still hopes for reconciliation. "I love her, and I don’t want to marry many wives as my father warned me. If she apologizes, I will forgive her," he said.
