Saboti Member of Parliament Caleb Amisi has echoed the concerns of Siaya County Governor James Orengo, calling on Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leaders to remain committed to the party's core principles.
His comments, shared on his X account on January 18, 2025, follow a strong message from Orengo about the importance of upholding integrity within the party.
Amisi expressed his agreement with Governor Orengo's recent remarks at the funeral of Roseline Odede, the chairperson of the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR).
Speaking in Uyoma, Rarieda Sub-County, Orengo honored Odede’s courageous stand against human rights violations, including abductions and extrajudicial killings.
Orengo used the occasion to urge ODM leaders to prioritize integrity over convenience, warning that compromising the party's identity for short-term gains could have long-lasting effects.
“We (ODM) have an identity. If you lose that identity for easy victories, we are going to pay for it in the future. If you must make compromises, you must make compromises on matters of principle,” Orengo said.
Amisi’s reaction was one of strong support. He emphasized the need for ODM leaders to challenge injustices, no matter their position in government.
He also made a pointed remark about those within the party who, in his view, have strayed from the party's values, stating, “Let’s not celebrate injustices under whatever circumstances in whichever position you are in government.”
Governor Orengo also reflected on the sacrifices made by people like Odede, who stood firm against government abuse despite facing retaliation.
He recalled how the government had withheld funds from KNCHR in response to Odede’s outspoken criticism, adding that sycophancy within politics often clouds people’s judgment on core principles.
These statements come at a time when questions about ODM’s internal unity have surfaced. Recently, ODM’s acting leader, Anyang Nyong’o, responded to media reports claiming divisions within the party.
Nyong’o described the January 10 Central Committee meeting as a routine session aimed at improving party democracy and emphasized that there was no conflict, dismissing the media rumors as false and damaging.
Nyong’o reassured ODM supporters that the party remains united and committed to its principles, urging the media to focus on accurate reporting for the sake of democratic progress.
