Residents of Komolo village in Siaya County are mourning the death of a 14-year-old boy who was attacked and killed by a crocodile while bathing in River Yala.
The tragic incident occurred on Sunday, January 12, 2025, leaving the community in shock.
The boy, Pascal Okoth, was a Grade 3 pupil at Bar-Kanyango Primary School.
He and his friends had spent the day fishing along the riverbank.
After finishing, the group decided to take a bath in the river to cool off. Tragically, as Pascal entered the water, a crocodile attacked him.
His friends, who were nearby, watched in terror as the reptile dragged him into the river.
Senior Chief Vicklice Opil Rabut described the harrowing scene, stating that villagers rushed to the river after hearing the children's screams.
When they arrived, they found the crocodile holding Pascal’s lifeless body and swinging it in the water.
Determined to recover the body, the residents mounted a rescue effort that lasted several hours.
Eventually, the crocodile released the boy’s remains, which were retrieved and transported to Bondo Sub-County Hospital mortuary for further examination.
This incident has left the village grieving and fearful. Many residents have expressed concerns over the frequent crocodile attacks in the area.
Ruth Achieng, a villager, lamented, “We are always afraid of these crocodiles. This is not the first time such an incident has happened here.”
The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has since launched an operation to track and eliminate the crocodile believed to be responsible for the attack.
Authorities aim to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
This heartbreaking event is not isolated. Just recently, in Isiolo County, a 13-year-old boy was attacked and swallowed by a crocodile near the Ewaso Nyiro River while herding goats.
Villagers managed to kill the reptile and retrieve the boy’s remains for burial.
