On January 25, 2025, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua surprised many by visiting Narc Kenya leader Martha Karua at her Gichugu home in Kirinyaga County.
Accompanied by his wife Dorcas and a group of political allies, including Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba, Naivasha MP Jane Kihara, Kipipiri MP Wanjiku Muhia, and Kirinyaga Senator James Murango, Gachagua brought gifts, including sheep and farm produce, sparking speculations about a possible political shift ahead of the 2027 General Election.
After the meeting, Gachagua addressed the public, revealing that he and Karua had reached an agreement to work together.
“We’ve had a good conversation with Hon. Martha Wangari Karua, and we have agreed that going forward, we will work together with other patriotic Kenyans,” Gachagua shared, making it clear that he and his allies would not be intimidated by political challenges.
He emphasized the importance of standing firm, saying, “If we don’t stand firm, the country will face serious challenges.”
Gachagua also praised Karua for her years of service and her commitment to justice, adding that she has earned respect from both Kenyans and people around the world.
“She’s a fighter for justice, and that’s why I have so much respect for her,” Gachagua said.
This unexpected meeting between the two leaders has raised questions about their political future.
Karua, who has been a vocal critic of the current government, also used the occasion to announce her plans to launch a new political party, the People’s Liberation Party (PLP), which she intends to use to run for president in 2027.
“This new party will officially launch in February 2025. We are ready to form alliances with those who are committed to making Kenya better,” Karua stated during the meeting.
Karua’s invitation to Gachagua to collaborate through her new political outfit has stirred even more speculation.
“Even if we have different political parties, we can still work together to form a strong alliance,” she said, suggesting that uniting opposition forces could help challenge President William Ruto’s leadership in the upcoming election.
