On January 25, 2025, a group of angry protesters gathered outside the warehouse of businessman Gibson Murage in Ruiru, Kiambu County, demanding answers about the disappearance of one of his employees.
The employee, whose identity has not been revealed, was reported missing following a fire that broke out at Murage’s Modern Furniture Pacific factory in December 2024.
The fire, which caused significant damage to the factory, is believed to have been triggered by a power surge when electricity was restored after a nationwide blackout.
The blaze destroyed machinery worth KSh 50 million, but Murage assured his customers that operations at his other branches in Nairobi, Nakuru, and Nyeri were not affected.
Following the incident, Murage disclosed that two individuals were captured on CCTV at the factory during the fire.
These individuals were later identified as persons of interest in the ongoing investigation.
However, the protesters, who appeared outside Murage’s warehouse, were more focused on finding their missing relative.
It is unclear whether the missing employee is linked to the fire or if the case is unrelated.
The protesters, determined to find their loved one, approached the warehouse gates and clashed with police officers guarding the premises.
In videos shared on social media, one protester was heard shouting, “We want the gate wide open so we can search and find him.
We’re not leaving until we have answers.” The crowd continued to bang on the gates and blow whistles, attracting the attention of passersby and local residents.
While some observers speculated that the protest could be linked to personal disputes or business competition, others believed the demonstration was fueled by frustration over the unresolved disappearance.
Social media users shared varying opinions, with some questioning Murage’s involvement in the incident.
In response to the fire, Murage assured the public that he had launched a thorough investigation into the cause and would continue operating his business despite the setback.
He also pledged that no employee would lose their job due to the fire, and he had already replaced the lost equipment to keep up with customer demand.
