On January 2, 2025, a violent mob of over 3,000 residents attacked Chemase Police Post in Nandi County, killing a murder suspect and causing significant damage to the station.
The suspect had been arrested the previous day after being linked to a gruesome murder, where the body of the victim was dismembered, and the head was found in a nearby borehole.
The suspect, who had initially been detained by the police, revealed disturbing details about the murder when he threatened to harm his own family members, including his mother.
This prompted her to alert local authorities. The police then arrested the suspect, who confessed to killing 38-year-old Enock Kipsang.
He also led the officers to the location where the victim’s body parts had been hidden.
The arrest, however, sparked outrage among the local community. The angry mob gathered at the police station, demanding that the suspect be handed over to them.
When their demands were refused, they became violent. The crowd set fire to a police vehicle, destroyed police property, and even set fire to both the police and national flags.
In a shocking turn of events, the mob broke into the station, found the suspect, and stoned him to death.
They then burned his body before dispersing. The mob also looted several items from the station, including a radio set, computers, and important documents.
During the chaos, three police officers sustained injuries.
The National Police Service (NPS) condemned the mob’s actions, stressing that taking the law into their own hands undermines the justice system.
NPS spokesperson Dr. Resila Onyango urged the public to cooperate with law enforcement and allow the legal system to handle criminal matters.
The police service emphasized that such incidents disrupt their ability to serve the public effectively.
