Ruben Karakacha Mukhwana, who had been on the run since October 2024, was arrested on Wednesday, January 7, 2025.
He was found in Kitale Town while attempting to purchase second-hand clothes.
The arrest was not without drama, as a large crowd gathered, demanding instant justice.
The situation escalated, forcing the police to fire warning shots into the air to disperse the angry mob.
Once the crowd cleared, Karakacha was taken into custody, bringing relief to residents who had lived in fear since his escaped.
Karakacha’s criminal activities first came to light in September 2024 when he was arrested for being in possession of a mobile phone belonging to a murdered bodaboda rider.
Further investigations uncovered a more gruesome discovery a woman’s body was found in his home.
These findings led to multiple charges, including murder and robbery with violence.
In October, while appearing at the Kitale Law Courts, Karakacha managed to escape custody.
He tricked officers by pretending he needed to use the bathroom, a move that allowed him to flee and remain at large for months.
His escape caused widespread concern in Kitale, with many residents fearing for their safety.
Reports of his alleged crimes, combined with his ability to outsmart authorities, left the community on edge.
The arrest has now brought a sense of relief, though questions remain about how he was able to evade capture for so long.
This case is reminiscent of another escape in August 2024 involving Collins Jumaisi Khalusha, a man who confessed to killing over 40 women.
Khalusha, along with 12 others, broke out of custody in a dramatic escape that involved cutting through a wire mesh roof.
Authorities have since called for stronger security measures to prevent similar incidents.
With Karakacha back in custody, police are urging citizens to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities.
They have emphasized the importance of cooperation between the public and law enforcement, offering anonymous hotlines like 999, 911, and 112 for reporting criminal activities.
