A political rift is brewing in Kisii County after Senator Richard Onyonka rejected an invitation to President William Ruto’s New Year’s Eve Dinner at Kisii State Lodge.
Onyonka explained that his decision was based on dissatisfaction with the government's performance, particularly on issues such as abductions, corruption, and human rights violations.
Kitutu Chache North MP and UDA Party Treasurer, Japheth Nyakundi, was quick to respond to Onyonka’s rejection, accusing him of hypocrisy.
Nyakundi, in a statement, called out the senator for being politically insincere, especially in his actions concerning the government.
“It’s absurd for elected leaders to speak from two sides of their mouth,” Nyakundi said. “You praise the President at State House, but then you act differently when it's convenient for you.
We need to stop this behavior in 2024. Let’s be honest in 2025.”
Nyakundi’s comments were a direct challenge to Onyonka, who he believes should have supported the event instead of boycotting it for political reasons.
However, Senator Onyonka remained resolute in his stance. In a statement, he highlighted the struggles faced by many Kenyans, especially the youth.
“It’s unconscionable to celebrate while so many Kenyan families are grieving and searching for their loved ones,” Onyonka said.
“This year has been filled with pain, particularly for young Kenyans who have suffered abductions and arbitrary arrests.”
The senator further accused the government of neglecting its responsibility to protect the people, adding that President Ruto’s administration had failed to address key issues, including abductions and violations of citizens’ rights.
Onyonka’s boycott of the event could create tension within Kisii County’s political landscape.
President Ruto’s visit was seen as an opportunity to strengthen relationships with local leaders, and Onyonka’s refusal to attend may strain his relationship with the ruling party.
Onyonka also called for the release of detained youths and urged the government to focus on addressing systemic issues facing the nation.
This disagreement is just one example of the growing political divides in the country, as leaders voice differing opinions on how the government should address ongoing challenges.
