Former Law Society of Kenya (LSK) president Nelson Havi has described Rigathi Gachagua, the impeached Deputy President, as a political force despite his shortcomings.
Speaking on Citizen TV, Havi acknowledged that Gachagua’s words often spark controversy, but his ability to mobilize large crowds cannot be ignored.
“Sometimes, Gachagua speaks out of jest, and at other times, it may seem like clownism,” said Havi.
“But the truth is, he knows how to pull crowds. That is his gift, and Kenyans, unfortunately, tend to listen more to those who entertain them.”
Since his impeachment, Gachagua has positioned himself as a vocal critic of President William Ruto and the Kenya Kwanza administration.
Once a staunch defender of the government, Gachagua now leads efforts to hold the administration accountable.
He has publicly accused Ruto of being intolerant and dictatorial, pointing to controversial tax policies that triggered nationwide protests in 2024.
“The government he runs is a one-man show,” Gachagua said. “He wants everything his way.
All those ministers you see are just flower girls. I was the only one who could stand up to him and say, ‘Boss, this won’t work.’”
Gachagua recently joined hands with opposition leaders Kalonzo Musyoka and Eugene Wamalwa, attending the launch of Wamalwa’s Democratic Action Party (DAP) headquarters in Nairobi.
He pledged to work with them to unseat Ruto in the 2027 elections.
“We are part of this team, and we will walk this journey together to liberate this country,” Gachagua declared.
“We will make any sacrifices necessary to ensure William Ruto is a one-term president.”
His remarks have drawn mixed reactions. While some applaud his boldness, others within Ruto’s circle dismiss his criticism as political grandstanding.
Havi, however, sees Gachagua’s growing influence as a factor that cannot be underestimated.
“He may have poor judgment in some cases, but his ability to attract and engage the masses gives him a unique edge in Kenyan politics,” noted Havi.
