Nairobi Governor, Johnson Sakaja, recently made an exciting announcement that is set to honor the memory of one of Kenya’s most iconic musicians.
During the Jamhuri Day celebrations at Uhuru Gardens, Governor Sakaja revealed plans to rename several roads in the city after legendary Kenyan artists.
Among those being honored is the late rapper, E-Sir, who will have a road named after him in the South C area of Nairobi.
E-Sir, born Issah Mmari, remains one of East Africa’s greatest rap artists despite his untimely death in 2003.
His music, including hit songs like ‘Leo Ni Leo’ and ‘Moss Moss’, continues to resonate with audiences even years after his passing.
His influence on the Kenyan music scene was significant, and his contributions have shaped the country's music culture.
Governor Sakaja expressed his support for recognizing and honoring the impact of Kenyan artists, noting that renaming roads in their honor is an important way to celebrate their legacy.
"We shall be honoring our artists by renaming some of the roads… One of the roads in South C will be renamed after the great hero E-Sir," Sakaja said during his speech.
This move to immortalize E-Sir’s legacy comes after a petition led by popular musician Nameless in 2022.
Nameless, who was a close friend of E-Sir and was with him at the time of the tragic accident, launched the petition to have a street in South C named after the rapper.
The petition garnered thousands of signatures from fans and supporters who felt that E-Sir's contribution to Kenyan music deserved recognition.
E-Sir’s music continues to be loved by many, and this renaming is a fitting tribute to the rapper who influenced a whole generation.
The decision to rename a road in South C after him ensures that his memory will live on in Nairobi, reminding both current and future generations of his artistic contributions.
Governor Sakaja’s move to honor E-Sir is not just a recognition of one individual but also a celebration of the wider Kenyan music industry and its influential figures.
