The family of Erick Ouma Ombewa, a 26-year-old graduate from Rongo University, is grappling with grief after his body was found following a week-long search.
Ouma, who graduated with a Bachelor of Education (Science) degree on December 27, 2024, went missing on December 31, just a few days after his graduation.
His disappearance left his family and friends anxious, with his mother making a heartbreaking visit to the mortuary in Bondo on January 9, 2025, where she confirmed the worst: her son was dead.
Ouma had been in good spirits during his graduation celebrations and was looking forward to the New Year.
On New Year’s Eve, he met up with friends to mark the occasion but left early to join others at a different location.
That was the last time his best friend, Brian Obutho, saw him.
Obutho recalled that they had celebrated together earlier in the day and that Ouma had shared plans to meet some friends at Akala Market later that evening.
However, after that night, Ouma’s phone was unreachable, and his family became increasingly worried.
Obutho, unable to get in touch with him, visited Ouma’s home several times but found no trace of his friend.
After involving the police, they traced Ouma's phone to a location, but despite efforts to find him, there were no immediate answers.
It wasn’t until Ouma’s body was found that his family and friends could begin to make sense of the situation.
According to Obutho, Ouma’s body was discovered with visible scars on his face.
An unidentified man had taken it to the mortuary before Ouma's mother could identify him.
Although the cause of his death remains unclear, investigations are ongoing.
This tragedy has left a profound impact on Ouma’s family, especially his mother, who had already been struggling emotionally with her son’s disappearance.
Obutho shared his sorrow, reflecting on the last moments he spent with his friend, which had ended with an unspoken promise of reunion that never came.
