In a tweet on January 7, 2025, lawyer Makau Mutua, a close ally of opposition leader Raila Odinga, strongly warned the people of Mt. Kenya against following former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua's political advice ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Gachagua, who has been working to consolidate support in the region, had earlier said that he would guide Mt. Kenya on the political path to take in the upcoming polls.
But Mutua disagreed with Gachagua's approach. He called the former deputy president a "political neanderthal" and urged the GEMA community not to listen to him.
In his tweet, Mutua said, “To my GEMA cousins — please ignore disgraced ex-DP Rigathi Gachagua like the plague that he is. The man will lead you ‘unto death and darkness.’”
He further criticized Gachagua for promoting tribal divisions, warning the people of Central Kenya to avoid a leader who he described as a supporter of "tribal apartheid."
Makau Mutua’s words reflect a growing tension in Mt. Kenya, where political leaders are positioning themselves for the 2027 elections.
Gachagua, on the other hand, has been holding consultations with leaders from the region to chart a new political course.
He recently stated that the region must carefully select its future leaders, pointing out that many past leaders betrayed their people for personal gain.
He believes that Mt. Kenya should avoid repeating these mistakes and should only elect leaders who are true patriots.
While Gachagua has been busy building support, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has remained focused on service delivery and not political rivalries.
Speaking at a church event in Mbeere North Constituency, Kindiki made it clear that he was not worried about Gachagua's growing influence in the region.
He stated, “Anyone who wants a political fight will be defeated early in the morning.”
