Kanduyi MP, John Waluke Salasya, recently made headlines when he expressed his hopes for Raila Odinga to be appointed as the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC).
According to Salasya, if Raila were to take on the prestigious role, he would be kept busy with continental affairs and not have time to "come and confuse us" in Kenyan politics.
Speaking candidly during a public event, Salasya, a strong political figure in Western Kenya, said, “I’m praying Raila gets the AUC chairmanship seat so he doesn’t come and confuse us.”
His statement suggests that he believes Raila's influence in Kenya's internal politics has caused enough tension, and that his departure to take on a continental role could bring stability to the local political scene.
Raila Odinga has been at the center of Kenyan politics for decades.
His involvement in key political movements and his role as an opposition leader has made him both a highly respected and, at times, a controversial figure.
While many of Raila’s supporters view him as a defender of democracy and an advocate for reforms, others criticize his frequent involvement in protests and political demonstrations.
These activities have led to accusations of destabilizing the political landscape.
The AUC Chairperson position, a powerful role within the African Union, requires the leader to oversee the continent’s political and economic goals, as well as to ensure that member states work together on issues like security and development.
If Raila were to take on this responsibility, Salasya believes it would remove him from the Kenyan political scene, thus preventing the unrest caused by his involvement in local matters.
Salasya’s remarks, although lighthearted in tone, highlight a deeper concern within some sections of Kenyan politics.
His plea for Raila to focus on Africa rather than national politics comes from a desire for peace and political order in Kenya.
While Salasya's statement has sparked online debate.
