Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has raised concerns about the impact of Kenya's police mission in Haiti on Raila Odinga's ambitions to become the chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC).
Speaking in Nairobi on Monday, January 27, Kalonzo warned that the mission could cost Raila his bid for the prestigious position at the AUC.
"The one thing that is becoming an obstacle for Raila at the AU is the Haiti mission," Kalonzo stated.
"He is being asked why an African country would go and harm blacks in a faraway country."
He emphasized that some African heads of state have raised concerns about the mission, particularly regarding the potential human rights violations by Kenyan officers in Haiti.
Kenya sent police officers to Haiti as part of an international peacekeeping mission to help restore stability in the Caribbean nation.
In January, an additional 217 officers were deployed to join the initial 400 already stationed in Haiti.
However, the mission has faced resistance from various political leaders and human rights groups, who argue that the presence of Kenyan forces could escalate the situation and harm the local population.
Kalonzo explained that these concerns from African leaders could be detrimental to Raila's chances of securing the AUC chairperson seat.
"Raila is a candidate of the Kenyan government. However, we are praying for him," Kalonzo added, offering his support for Raila despite the challenges posed by the Haiti mission.
The AUC elections, where Raila hopes to win the top position, are scheduled to take place during the 38th Ordinary Session of the African Union Assembly from February 12 to 16, 2025.
Kalonzo’s comments shed light on the political tensions surrounding the mission and its potential effects on Kenya’s diplomatic standing within the African Union.
As Raila Odinga continues his campaign for the AUC chairperson role, his supporters remain hopeful.
However, the criticism from some African leaders about the police deployment in Haiti may add an unexpected challenge to his quest for the influential position.
